Things you can do

Civic Leaders, projectPG.org is specifically designed to HELP you, not create more work for you, we all know you have plenty of work already!

How does projectPG.org help government boards, commissions, committees and departments? projectPG.org is designed to help civic leadership, local businesses and community organizations distribute information in a consistent, predictable, affordable, automated way to citizens -- without cost!

The unfortunate reality is, most citizens never take the time to visit web-sites, study board minutes or attend town-hall meetings. It would be nice if everyone in town was aware of next weeks important meeting. It would be nicer if they all showed up! Fact is, hundreds (or thousands) of people learn a few days AFTER an event, too late to participate. The projectPG.org web-site is promoting and administering a community wide information network hinged around a centralized community database and an automated information distribution system. Sounds complicated...it's not.

How does it work?

  1. Government groups, committees and departments, businesses and community organizations are organized in a master directory (Project Directory).
  2. Simple web-based forms are completed to create Project Pages associated with organizations. Project Pages are simple to create (like writing an e-mail) and are used to distribute community news, put calendar events on the calendar and make general community announcements. The people doing this are normally organization leaders.
  3. An automated system scans the community database for new and upcoming information and sends e-mails to anyone on the community mailing list at a frequency they choose.
  4. Citizens informed. Important community information is delivered with no cost for printing, mailing or advertising. It really is that simple.

Not everyone is on the mailing list? True. Every member of the community is not going to join the mailing list. Just like every member of the community is not going to read unsolicited mail, the newspaper or watch TV. Your willingness to promote and use the community information network is the number one factor that will ultimately determine the success of the project.

A few short years from now Pacific Grove could have a substantial and incredibly useful information network, OR NOT. The citizens and leaders will be the determining factor. If hundreds or thousands of residents join the mailing list (tons already have) and civic information is delivered to their inboxes, they will be better informed. This doesn't mean civic participation will increase but it certainly won't hurt.

How can we get involved and support the community information network?

  1. Join the mailing list. Use your leverage as a respected voice and ask citizens to join the mailing list. Without a substantial list the effectiveness of the system is greatly reduced.
  2. Create a projectPG.org Screen Name so you can log-in and add information to the centralized database. Spend a few minutes gaining an understanding of how easy this really is.
  3. When important information needs delivered, visit the site, log-in, find the Project associated with your group, committee or department (most of them are already in the directory) and create a simple Project Page. Cut-and-paste your message, add the calendar event, etc.
  4. Help us help you. We are sincere when we say we want to help. The developers of this site are not government leaders. Many of the thoughts and ideas are generalized assumptions. Feedback is very helpful. Improvements are likely easy but there are lots of things to consider. Many minds are better than one....send us your thoughts ;-)
